Steel/Maple/Walnut
The concept of a sling chair, inspired by the Mayan hammock, has long been a favorite lounge chair typology dating back a thousand years. It’s sleek conceptual design featuring fabric hung between a slender frame caught the eyes of the modernist movement and gained popularity with Le Corbusier’s LC1 chair. Despite its visual splendor, the sling chair concept is ergonomically flawed. The lack of rigidity through the lower back pulls users' legs towards their chest making it difficult to get in and out of the chair.
Slinky 2.0 seeks to solve this issue by re-imagining the fabric itself. Opting for a semi-rigid fabric material made from links of maple, the chair not only improves exiting the chair, but it also allows for lumbar support. The uniquely shaped maple links are strung together by a concealed steel dowel capped with walnut inlays. To pronounce the shape of the fabric itself, the steel frame is minimalist in nature.
